Product detailed description

Wangprom green balm: a cooling Thai herbal balm for massage

The green Wangprom is a Thai herbal balm made for massage. It cools rather than warms, and because it contains only a little camphor, its scent stays gentle and herbal instead of stinging the nose. A typical moment to use it is after sport, after a long day on your feet or after hours at the computer.

Wangprom and Barleria lupulina explained

Wangprom (also spelt Wang Prom or Wangphrom) is a Thai brand of herbal massage balms. It makes balms in several colours, each with a different herbal base. The green balm is the cooling one.

Its main herb, Barleria lupulina, is known in Thai as salet phangphon. It is a shrub from the Acanthaceae family and one of the best known plants in Thai folk cosmetics, traditionally added to balms and ointments for massage.

Wangprom green balm ingredients

Listed from the largest share to the smallest:

  • Petroleum jelly: the base that makes the balm easy to spread.
  • Barleria lupulina tincture: the main herbal ingredient.
  • Paraffin: gives the balm its firm texture in the jar.
  • Menthol: the typical cooling sensation.
  • Borneol: a woody note in the scent.
  • Camphor: only a small amount, so the scent does not sting.

How to use the balm

  1. Take a pea-sized amount.
  2. Apply it to clean, dry skin, for example on the neck, shoulders, back or calves.
  3. Massage it in with circular movements until absorbed.
  4. Wash your hands with soap and close the jar.

Wangprom or tiger balm?

  • Base: tiger balm relies mainly on camphor and essential oils, green Wangprom on the Thai herb Barleria lupulina.
  • Scent: Wangprom is herbal and minty, softer and less pungent.
  • Sensation: green Wangprom cools, it does not warm.

What should you know before using Wangprom green balm?

Does it warm or cool?

It cools. Green Wangprom contains menthol and borneol, and you will feel a pleasant coolness shortly after applying it.

How much balm do I need?

A pea-sized amount is enough for one area, such as the neck or a calf, so the 50 g jar lasts a long time.

Can I use it on my temples?

In Thailand this is common. Use only a very small amount and keep it well away from your eyes.

Can I cover it with a bandage or a heating pad?

No. Do not bandage the area tightly and do not use the balm together with a heating pad.

Who should not use it?

Do not apply it to broken or irritated skin or use it if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Children under 12 should use it only after consulting a doctor.

Note: For external use only. Do not apply to broken or irritated skin and avoid the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not bandage tightly and do not use with a heating pad. Test on a small area of skin before first use. For children under 12, use only after consulting a doctor. Keep out of reach of children.
