You have brought home the “black miracle” from Karelia and are asking yourself: “What now?”. In order for shungite to bring you maximum benefit, it is essential to know how to use it correctly and how to care for it. In this guide, we will show you step by step the best ways to use shungite in everyday life.

Basic ways to use shungite
Today, shungite is mainly used in three main areas:
- for working with water,
- in space (home, office),
- on the body (jewelry, stones).
Each method has its specifics and requires a slightly different approach. There is no single universal “correct” way, but it always depends on what purpose you expect from shungite.
From a practical point of view, one basic rule applies: the more direct the contact with shungite, the more important its quality and maintenance are.
1. The most common use: Preparation of shungite water
Making your own filtered and activated water is the most popular way to use the sorption and antibacterial properties of shungite. It is simple, but to achieve the correct result, several rules must be followed.
What you will need:
- Shungite gravel or smaller stones: The ideal ratio is approximately 100 g of shungite per 1 liter of water.
- Glass carafe or jug: Avoid plastic containers.
- Regular tap water.
Step-by-step procedure:
-
Initial thorough rinsing: New shungite is covered with fine black dust. Before first use, rinse the gravel thoroughly under running water in a sieve or bowl. Rinse it until the water running off is no longer black. Note: the water may be very dark at first – this is normal.
-
Preparing the infusion: Place the rinsed stones at the bottom of a clean glass carafe and pour cold tap water over them.
-
Activation process (steeping): Let the water stand. It becomes crystal clear after about an hour, but the full antibacterial and harmonizing effects appear after 12 to 24 hours.
-
Tip: Do not exceed a steeping time of 48 hours, as the water may acquire too “metallic” a taste.
-
Consumption: You can drink the water like regular table water, use it to make tea or coffee, or for washing your face.
Practical advice: After you drink the water, do not leave the stones “dry”. Immediately pour new water over them. The bottom layer of water (approx. 2–3 cm above the stones), where impurities settle, should be poured out or used to water plants.
2. Shungite in space
Thanks to its electrical conductivity and unique structure, shungite is widely used to shield and neutralize electromagnetic radiation (so-called electrosmog) and geopatogenic zones. For these purposes, shaped forms are most often used.
Pyramids and cubes against electrosmog
Shapes such as pyramids, spheres, or cubes are not only aesthetic, but also help better direct the stone’s energy.
Where to place them?
-
Desk: Place the pyramid between yourself and the source of radiation (computer monitor, laptop, Wi-Fi router). The ideal distance is within 50 cm of the device.
-
Bedroom: For more peaceful sleep, place a shungite object on the bedside table, but not directly next to your head (some people may be sensitive to the energy). It helps neutralize the influence of a mobile phone if you have one in the bedroom.
-
Living room: A suitable place is near the television or hi-fi system.
What size pyramid should you choose?
A simple rule applies: the larger the source of radiation (or the larger the room), the larger the shungite object should be.
- Small pyramid (approx. 5 cm base): Sufficient for a laptop or a small desk.
- Larger pyramid (10 cm or more): Suitable for covering a larger area of a room.
More important than quantity is regular maintenance (see below).
3. Shungite on the body
Wearing shungite directly on the body is a way to keep its harmonizing effects with you at all times. It is believed to help balance the human bioenergetic field and protect against negative influences from the surroundings.
Pendants, bracelets, and beads
When choosing jewelry, make sure that the stone touches the skin directly whenever possible.
- Pendants: Most often worn in the chest area (heart chakra) or on the neck.
- Bracelets: Popular for everyday wear, they help maintain vitality.
Warning: Because shungite is a relatively soft carbon stone, it may initially lightly stain clothing or skin. This is not a defect, but a property of the material. Over time, this staining will stop.
Plates for mobile phones
One of the most popular modern uses are small, thin self-adhesive shungite plates.
Use: Stick the plate to the back of the mobile phone (or under the case). The goal is to mitigate the direct impact of electromagnetic waves on the brain during phone calls.
Maintenance and care of shungite
This is the most important point of the entire guide. Shungite functions as a filter, meaning it absorbs impurities and negative energy. If you do not clean it regularly, it will become “clogged” and stop working; in the worst case, it may start releasing accumulated impurities back.
Shungite care has two levels: mechanical and energetic.
1. Regular mechanical cleaning (for water gravel)
If you use shungite for water preparation, you must clean it of physical deposits.
-
How often: Approximately once every 2–4 weeks.
-
Procedure: Remove the stones from the carafe. Place them in a bowl with warm water. You can use an old toothbrush or the rough side of a sponge and gently clean the stones (especially the larger ones) of slime or coating. Do not use any chemical detergents, only clean water! Finally, rinse them thoroughly.
-
When to replace the gravel: Even with good care, the sorption capacity of common shungite is exhausted over time. It is recommended to replace the gravel with new ones after approximately 6 months of intensive use.
2. Energetic cleansing and charging (for all shungites)
For shungite (including pyramids and jewelry) to retain its unique properties, it needs to “recharge its batteries”. The best source is natural light.
-
Charging in sunlight: Once a month (or when you feel the stone “is not working”), expose washed and dried shungite to direct sunlight. Leave it in the sun for at least 2–3 hours. Sunlight regenerates the stone.
-
Charging during a full moon: An alternative is to leave shungite overnight on a windowsill during a full moon.
These methods are based more on traditional and alternative approaches rather than scientific studies.
What to avoid?
- aggressive chemicals,
- long-term soaking in contaminated water,
- mechanical damage (elite shungite is very fragile).
Conclusion
Using shungite is not complicated science. It is enough to follow one basic rule: for shungite to cleanse and protect you, you must cleanse and protect it. Dedicate a few minutes of care to your stones each month, and they will reward you with their full natural power.
