Kanna Extract: Liquid Extract of Sceletium Tortuosum

Kanna extract is a tincture made from Sceletium tortuosum, a low growing succulent belonging to the Aizoaceae family, native to a narrow strip of land near Cape Town, South Africa. We also carry kanna in powdered form, but the extract is the most concentrated format in our range. Ten millilitres in a dark glass bottle, shielded from light, with a precision dropper.

From a Traditional Plant to a Patented Standardized Extract

For most of its history, kanna was processed by hand using traditional methods passed down through generations of Khoikhoi and San communities. That changed in the early 2000s, when South African researchers isolated and standardized the plant's alkaloid content under a patented trade name, sparking a wave of renewed scientific interest in the plant outside Africa. Today the same species appears in both artisanal, small batch extracts and large scale standardized products, often with very different alkaloid ratios depending on which part of the plant and which processing method was used.

Mesembrine and the Alkaloid Profile of Kanna

The plant's principal alkaloid is mesembrine, though kanna actually contains a family of related compounds whose ratios shift depending on the chemotype, growing conditions, and harvest time. This is one of the main reasons quality varies so widely between suppliers: two bottles labelled "kanna extract" can come from genetically different plant populations with meaningfully different chemical profiles.
