Product detailed description
Kava Kava Extract: Concentrated Extract of Piper Methysticum
Kava kava extract is a tincture made exclusively from the root of Piper methysticum, a plant native to Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa, and Hawaii. We also carry kava kava in powdered form, but the extract is the most concentrated format we stock. Ten millilitres in a dark glass bottle, shielded from light, with a precision dropper.
Piper Methysticum: A Name With Its Own History
The species was formally described in 1786 by the German naturalist Georg Forster, who had sailed with Captain Cook's second Pacific voyage a decade earlier and encountered the plant firsthand across several island groups. The word "kava" itself comes from Polynesian languages and roughly translates to "bitter", a fairly blunt but accurate description of the root's taste. Centuries before any of this made it into a European botanical record, the plant was already central to social and ceremonial life across the Pacific.
That tradition has, in recent decades, crossed into an entirely different setting: a wave of dedicated kava bars has opened across cities in the US and elsewhere, serving traditionally prepared kava as part of the wider trend toward alcohol free social spaces. It's a strange loop for a plant first written down by an 18th century naturalist.
Kava Kava: Quality Differences Between Cultivars
Pacific growers distinguish between dozens of cultivars, broadly grouped into two categories. Noble varieties are the ones traditionally used across generations. Tudei varieties grow faster and cost less to produce, but traditional practice has historically avoided them. Vanuatu has gone as far as legislating that only noble cultivars may be exported, specifically to protect the reputation of its most significant crop. For a buyer, this means the source material matters more with kava than with most other plants, the difference between cheap and quality material is a genetic one, not a marketing claim.
Kava Kava Extract vs. Kava Kava Powder: Which to Choose
- Concentration: 1500 mg of extract in 10 ml, for reference, 25 drops corresponds to roughly 5 g of strong powder
- Zero preparation: no straining bag, no cold water maceration, no kneading
- Gentle extraction: carried out without hot water, which breaks down kavalactones
- Light protection: dark glass reduces UV exposure
- Compact: the bottle fits easily into a display case or travel kit

Quality and Origin of Our Kava Kava Extract
We process only the root of the plant. Leaves and stems have a different composition and were never used in traditional Pacific preparation, even though they occasionally appear on the market as a cheaper filler. Extraction is carried out without heat, to preserve the original balance of kavalactones, the compounds characteristic to the root and highly sensitive to both heat and light. Bottles are filled and labelled in the Czech Republic.
Frequently Asked Questions About Kava Kava Extract
What's the difference between kava kava extract and powder?
Powder is dried, ground root, traditionally macerated in cold water through a straining bag. The extract is a ready made liquid extract, no preparation needed. They differ in format, storage, and handling.
How much powder does one bottle correspond to?
25 drops corresponds to the concentration of roughly 5 g of strong kava kava powder. The full 10ml bottle contains 1500 mg of extract.
What are kavalactones?
Kavalactones are the characteristic compounds found in the Piper methysticum root. Their ratio varies by cultivar, and they're sensitive to heat and light, which is why kava is traditionally never prepared with hot water.
What's the difference between noble and tudei kava?
Noble cultivars are the traditional varieties used across generations in Pacific cultures. Tudei varieties grow faster and cost less, but traditional practice historically avoided them. Vanuatu legally restricts exports to noble cultivars only.
How should I store the extract?
In the original packaging, stored upright, at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Dark glass protects the contents, but prolonged exposure to heat is best avoided.
